It is easily recognizable by its sword-shaped horns and distinctive markings. Its slightly curved, black-ringed horns can reach up to 1.5 meters in length. It adapts well to its arid habitat. It does not pant or sweat until its body temperature reaches 45 degrees. Its urine is concentrated and sparse, and its feces are dry, which further reduces water loss. It feeds at night, in the early morning, or in the late afternoon. It eats grasses and shrubs, and among fruits, it quenches its thirst primarily with melons and gourds. With its pointed horns, it defends itself effectively, sometimes even against lions.
